My eyes slowly peeled open as I roused from sleep at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday morning, a time that had been foreign to me for the majority of the past two months. A foreboding tune danced through the house, growing ever louder and nearer – it was my dad bellowing a chorus of “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year…” Unfortunately, he wasn’t referring to Christmas; summer had reached its demise – August 9th marked the first day of school at Pusch Ridge Christian Academy. As I glumly emerged from my car onto campus as one might approach the gallows, a familiar blue golf cart whizzed by, and the jovial face of Pusch Ridge’s most beloved patron, Mr. Wren, immediately dissipated my sour attitude. It was good to be back. Trepidation, excitement, and curiosity permeated the halls all at once - bug-eyed freshman, disoriented new students, freshly-groomed middle schoolers, and already-apathetic seniors late to class. Then Principal O’Reilly’s chipper voice flooded the airwaves, and it was as if we’d never left. By two o'clock, most first day jitters had disappeared, whether it was due to Mrs. Linaman’s motherly embrace or Mrs. Dunmyre’s gourmet five-star cooking. It was by no means a flawless introduction to the year – I, for one, suffered a nasty spill while running to embrace Mrs. Kirk, acquired a layer of gum underneath one of my Sperries at lunch, then later nearly took my finger off shutting a door. But inevitable first-day mishaps made Tuesday all the more memorable. It was the last first day of high school for about 60 of us, and although the halls mourn the departure of the preceding senior class, the time has finally come for the Class of 2012 to seize the reins!
